About Indoor Bowls

If you watch in door bowls it looks simple and in essence it is. The game involves rolling a 'wood' along a mat and trying to get your wood nearer to a jack than your opponent, 'a jack being a small white ball' of course in practice it is not this simple!

Firstly the woods do not roll in a straight line - they have a bias and to compensate for this the players have to judge where to roll the woods.

Secondly there is the issue of distance to the jack. In order to position the wood near to the jack players need to judge how hard to roll their wood, in the parlance of the game this is referred to as how much weight to use with a roll of the wood.

Thirdly the carpets have edges and woods that leave the carpet are disqualified.

Lastly there is the slight issue of your opponents who will do their best to prevent you being nearer to the jack than them by knocking your wood away or blocking the path to the jack.

So, a simple game is now more interesting requiring skill and tactics. All good for keeping our minds and bodies healthy and for having a social fun day.
